Department / Role Overview

Ashurst's Global Business Development team is located in major cities across EMEA, Asia Pacific and the US. We execute the firm's strategy and drive profitable growth with a specific focus on our chosen practices, sectors and priority clients. We focus on our client experience, driving campaigns, leveraging client insights, and managing strategic initiatives to service our client's needs.

Our Corporate and Digital Economy practice is central to the success of the firm and is a leading practice across our network. We have huge ambitions for the future growth of the practice, which requires significant business development support to help us realise our potential.

Main Responsibilties

Strategy & Planning

  • Work with the BD team and key partners to develop and execute the BD strategy to maximise opportunities to grow revenue in line with the firm's strategic plan
  • Coach relevant partners and associates to deliver the business development objectives
  • Develop and lead strategic initiatives to meet the business plan goals, evaluating progress on implementation
  • Provide market information and analysis of financials to identify trends and opportunities to raise our profile and awareness in key markets

Opportunity Management

  • Manage and support the entire opportunity pursuit process, including identifying opportunities, managing opportunity tracking processes, preparing client-focused sales collateral and coordinating partners around pipelines and strategic pursuits
  • Collaborate with other practice and industry BDMs to identify and follow-up on cross-selling opportunities
  • Support all relevant major client opportunities including pitches and proposals, working closely with the Global Bids and Pricing teams
  • Ensure that post matter debriefs are completed for strategically important pitches

Practice Management

  • Support integrated campaigns, thought leadership, events and other market facing activities, working collaboratively with the firm's industry teams and comms and marketing specialists, to raise our profile in key markets
  • Manage the BD budget, monitoring spend and capturing ROI
  • Maintain knowledge of key and emerging issues impacting the department
  • Share knowledge across the wider BD team and contribute to functional and firm-wide training programmes
  • Ensure the requirements for data capture are met (e.g. experience statements; relevant directory and award submissions; etc.)
  • Work collaboratively with regional teams to help them engage with departmental initiatives and priorities
  • Contribute to wider BD team projects, including supporting new systems and processes, as required

Client Focus

  • Support Client Relationship Partners to develop and execute client plans for key clients to help deepen relationships and drive profitable growth across the Ashurst network
  • Coordinate and manage pipeline development with the Client Relationship Partners within the designated client accounts
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the key departmental clients and their businesses, and assist with the sharing of that information within Ashurst
  • Coordinate and liaise with BD colleagues to ensure consistency and sharing of strategic information across clients
  • Take a client facing role including conducting, capturing, and ensuring the firm acts on client feedback through client listening, matter and pitch debriefs

Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience in a professional services BD environment (5+ years' experience)
  • Tertiary qualification in business or related relevant field
  • Experience supporting Corporate practices preferred
  • Demonstrated experience of leading and coaching teams on pursuits and clients
  • Proven experience in managing and career coaching a team of BD professionals
  • Commercial awareness and ability to bring the client's perspective into the frame
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills
  • Gravitas, authority, diplomacy and strong communication and influencing skills
  • Strategic thinker with strong focus on execution
  • Ability to build positive and collaborative working relationships with the BD and legal teams
  • Previous client facing experience preferred
